During the golden globes, American comedian and actor Jo Koy, gave a controversial speech in regards to Barbie, Oppenheimer, other major TV shows and films as well as part of the crowd. There are many takes on this controversial monologue, and Koy is facing backlash on this many may think that he is doing it as a publicity stunt to gain attention.
The golden globes are a yearly celebration of recognition of outstanding achievement in motion pictures and television during the previous year. This year was the 81st celebration of the Golden Globes, hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael. The Golden Globes typically get a significant following from viewers. On average around 9.4 million viewers, growing by about 50 percent more than the previous year.
While the award show gets a lot of attention from the audience at home, the show is popular among A-list celebrities and personnel. This year was a bit different than the previous years however, as movies like Barbie, Oppenheimer, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, John Wick: Chapter 4, and more, additionally featuring popular songs from movie soundtracks, as well as best drama TV series, and the best actresses and actors.
One reaction from a student here at Joliet West comes from sophomore Esha Rathod as she stated, “He sounds really immature and it was embarrassing to watch and listen to the entire monologue. It was extremely disrespectful to everyone and this is as bad as the Will Smith slap” Additionally freshman Crystal Gallegos said “ It was very disrespectful for him to say, and just really showing the entire point of the Barbie movie, proving the movies purpose, and I absolutely loved Ryan Gosling’s response to his monologue”
Many people have strong opinions even talking to the media about defending his speech or disagreeing with him and the overall tone of Koy’s speech. Other years the golden globes haven’t faced this much attention on the issue, and many forms of media are on this topic, expressing some disappointment, others make interesting points on the issue, and some simply not caring.
