Joliet West cross-country program reaches major milestone
November 21, 2013
On November 9, 2013 junior Dan Treasure and sophomore Charlotte Youell became the first Joliet West cross-country runners to run at a State meet since the West and Central split.
The good news came on November 2, 2013 at the Sectional meet at the 5K cross-country course on the SIUE campus in Edwardsville. Both Treasure and Youell ran excellently at Sectionals with Treasure running a 16:13 and placing 7th for the boys race and Youell running a 19:52 and placing 16th for the girls race. Their strong performances qualified them for 3A State meet.
On November 8, 2013, Youell and Treasure left school with their coaches to head down to Peoria and prepare for their big day.
Treasure and Youell left their hotel early in the morning on November 9th to come to Detweiller Park in Peoria to compete. The park was packed with fans, IHSA officials, and over 400 runners on an unusually nice day for November.
At 1:00, the gun went off for the girls race and Youell took off. Coming around the first mile at 5:52 and the second mile at 12:24, Youell finished the race at the third mile in exactly 19 minutes placing her 145th overall. An hour later, the gun went off for the boys race and Treasure took off. Treasure ran the first mile at a 5:03 and the second mile at a 10:57. Dan finished with a 16:51 at the third mile placing him in 211th overall.
Although Treasure and Youell did not have their best performances at State, having two individuals qualify and run at State is a major milestone for the Joliet West cross-country program.
Not only will these two get a shot at State next year, it also shows other area high schools that the Joliet West cross-country teams are a force to be reckoned with.
