The tournament was structured into high-pressure “Blocks” where students had to translate raw data into compelling media. Blocks A and B provided 90-minute windows for specialized tasks like Advertising, Infographics, and Sports Writing. Meanwhile, the A&B Double Block challenged students with a three-hour marathon of production for categories like Video News and Radio, requiring immense focus and creative stamina.
Beyond those who placed, the Joliet West Conference Team was represented by a dedicated cohort of storytellers, including Makayla Hawkins, Kylie Tyus, Deissa Gutierrez, Madison Wingerter, and Maia James. Each student navigated their respective categories with the professionalism and character that defines the West program.
“I am incredibly proud of the dedication these students have shown to their craft,” said Advisor Jenn Galloy. “Their performance this weekend was a testament to their growth as storytellers. They represented Joliet West with the highest level of professionalism and character, proving that they are ready to lead our school’s voice into the future.”
The team is not allowing for any stagnation following their conference success. With the initial brightness of these wins behind them, the Tigers are already analyzing their feedback from the judges and refining their techniques. They are building significant momentum as they prepare for the IHSA Journalism Sectionals this April 11th, where they will once again put their skills to the test on a larger stage.
