Students educated in online safety

Freshman students from Joliet West had the opportunity to attend a presentation about online predators, safety and sexting. This presentation was presented by a speaker, Liz Repking. During the presentation, she engaged the freshman by giving real life stories that she has encountered. The audience seemed very attentive. Freshman Kendall Schlegel stated “The presentation was interesting and Mrs. Repking knew a lot of stuff and expressed just how important it is to stay safe online. Something I think really needs to be talked about a lot more.” Liz informed them about how online predators will do anything for you to tell them where you live. Predators get some information just from overexposure. Teenagers and kids are putting too much information online. Putting too much information and inappropriate language can cause issues for colleges and careers later on in life. She emphasized, “what you post stays up,” because colleges use students social media sites as a recruiting tool. She wants students to realize how much social media affects your future life. Liz started presenting to parents, kids and a small class about two years ago. She talks to parents because she wants them to be informed on what their children are doing. This way, parents and children can communicate to work on safety through the internet. She likes to present to freshman because she believes they are still young enough and learning where they can change how they use the internet. She normally doesn’t present to juniors and seniors because soon they will be 18 years old and should have enough responsibility to be smart online. But, next year she will be having sophomores attend the presentation as well as freshman. Repking started presenting because she is a parent and she coaches sports, in which she has close relationships with children and wants them to all feel safe.
