November 21, 2013
On November 14, 2013, ABC 7 news posted a poll in determining who had the best Friday Flyover. The polling ended at 7 o’clock that night, with Joliet West at 28.8% and Downers Grove North at 28.2%. On November 15, 2013 ABC 7 Chicago returned at 6:30am to award a trophy to Dr. Gibson and the students who showed school spirit who came to support Joliet West.
Twitter was in an uproar that night with pleads to get everyone to vote as much as they possibly could to insure our school to win Favorite Flyover. The appearance of school spirit on social media was a great factor in our success.
Lately, our school has gotten more recognition in the media. Joliet Township was named the only school district in the list of 100 top places to work, while there were 237 other companies nominated for this award. The Chicago Tribune posted the list on November 12, 2013. This is the second year in a row that Joliet Township has received this honor, based solely on employee feedback.
“I have always known that we have an outstanding school district with amazing staff, students, community and Board of Education,” said Joliet Township High School Superintendent Dr. Cheryl McCarthy. “This award gives us the opportunity to take pride in our positive school climate.”
Another way our school has shown school spirit is with including the Friday Flyover, the pep assembly, and other various footage in a video montage. It all came together for another ABC 7 contest with bringing Katy Perry to our school. Although we did not win it was a great way to showcase who we are as the Joliet West Tigers.
Joliet Township has school tremendous amounts of school spirit, especially being the 2014 class will be the 50th graduating class. It really shows how great our school can be with what spirit we put into it.
