Local Cafes for Coffee Lovers

Sarah Shay, staff writer

Autumn brings many activities to mind: raking leaves, carving pumpkins, apple picking. But a modern tradition that has become a staple for many Americans is enjoying a fall-themed drink from a local coffee shop.

The infamous ‘PSL’, or pumpkin spice latte, is the most well-known fall drink, but there are many varieties that can be indulged in this season. For those trying to find the best spots for a good autumn drink, here are some local cafes that feature seasonally appropriate drinks.

The Book and Bean Cafe is a quaint space perfect for students wanting a space to hang out and relax. The cafe is located just inside of the Black Road branch of the Joliet Public Library, and has a walking trail and outdoor tables just past the library.

Their fall options cover food and drinks, including a pumpkin spice latte, and an apple harvest panini. The variety of menu options and cozy space make this cafe a great choice for those looking for a space to enjoy the fall weather.

A five star google review from Mary Alltop calls the cafe “a treasure housed within the Joliet Public Library’s Black Road Branch.”

Black Dog Vinyl Cafe is a fairly recent cafe which is always updating and adding new options to their menu, as well as the impressive vinyl records which are also available to buy. Black Dog Vinyl can be found along route 59.

Their coffee comes from local, family owned distributors, and can be ordered in a variety of drinks. Their rotating menu of aptly named specialty drinks includes ‘Humble Pie’, which has apple and caramel flavors, and ‘Smashing Pumpkin’, which is pumpkin flavored.

One google review from Paul Lichamer gave five stars, adding “excellent environment and some great flavored specialty coffee drinks.”

Other nearby cafes include Krema Coffee House, which  is located in downtown Plainfield, on Lockport Street. This cafe also features a variety of food as well as drinks. Kafe de Kasa is in Crest Hill; the cafe offers pastries, and a diverse selection of drinks.

Be sure to check out these local favorites if you are an autumn enthusiast looking for new places to go!
